Judging & Scoring Criteria

Judging will be on a 10 point system with half points.

Competitors will be judged on:
  1. Open face part of wave
  2. Nose Riding
  3. Riding Style
  4. Wave Selection (size of wave)
  5. Length of Ride (in open face of wave & reform)
  6. Controlled functional maneuvers.
  • We’re looking for old school nose riding. Tell your team to hold those 10’s.
  • Shuffling, hopping on your board, may not be scored as high as walking.
  • Finishing all maneuvers is best!
  • White water part of wave scores very little as part of your ride.
  • Single fin only. Surfboards must be a min of 9 feet in length. Juniors may use boards which are 3 feet longer than the height of the contestant.
  • No Cords - Contestants assumes responsibility for no cord use.
  • Highest two (2) waves will count towards your total scoring.
  • Ties are broken by going to the 3rd highest wave and if needed then going back to your second highest scoring wave.
  • The first rider up, closer to the curl has wave possession. In the event two riders stand up at the same time rider closest to the curl has possession.
  • Size of wave, wave selection, style, length of ride and functional maneuvers on open face part of wave with the most critical part of wave being the highest.
  • A 6-wave max limit.
  • Top two highest scoring waves count for total points and placement.

Heats will be 15 minutes, Final heats will be 15 minutes. Each heat will begin and end with one horn blast and display of green flag. A five minute warning will be given with two horn blasts and the display of yellow flag. At the conclusion of the heat competitors will immediately return to the beach as the next heat begins. If a competitor stands up before the beginning of the heat it will result in the loss of the points scored for the highest scoring wave for the competitor earned in that heat. Exiting competitors must not stand up after the conclusion of their heat. Violation of this will result in a deduction of the lowest scorning wave of the competitors heat total. All competitors must check in 15 minutes before their heat.

In all beach starts, competitors may enter the water up to their hips at the five minute warning (two horn blasts). Competitors waiting for their heat to start must stay clear of heat in progress.

Interference

Don't ride a wave in front of other competitors. If you interfere or impede with another rider’s ability to perform on this wave then you will get penalized.

Try to notify competitor in the water when they have reached the limit.

Snake rule: Paddling front of or around behind a competitor to impede then as to take advantage of having position for wave possession. Known as "snaking". an interference (Loss of highest scoring wave).

Protests must be addressed within 30 minutes with the Head Judge or Contest Director of conclusion. Only the team caption will be allowed to speak with Contest Director or Head Judge. Failure to comply my result disqualification.

No harm No foul rule well also be enforced!

We’re asking each club to provide three qualified Judges to help out with Judging. We will be using Net Sport /Tom Neffcy system so heats will be available as soon as scores come in at Netsportmgt.com. We will also be posting updated heats and results on the billboard on the beach. MSA crew will be tabulating and will be head judge and spotting. Malibu “Surfrider” Beach is part of Malibu Lagoon State Beach, which also comprises the Malibu Lagoon and the Malibu Pier.

Although all of these areas are adjacent to each other, each element of Malibu Beach offers visitors a totally unique beach experience.

Malibu Lagoon is comprised of 22 acres of wetlands, gardens, and sandy beach, while Malibu “Surfrider” Beach has almost a mile of ocean frontage with 0.7 acres of property, and famous Malibu Pier is a great place for saltwater fishing.

For an educational experience, Malibu Lagoon State Beach is the place to go. The State operated Malibu Lagoon is a resting and feeding estuary for more than 200 species of migrating and native birds, making this an ideal location for bird watching enthusiasts.

There is also the saltwater marsh for those that want to study an ecosystem that is greatly diminished in Southern California. The Adamson House, a National Historic Site, houses many Malibu historical artifacts. The Malibu Lagoon Museum which adjoins the Adamson House, allows visitors to walk through the history of the area from the days of the Chumash tribe, to the gentlemen ranchers, and finally to the birth of the surfing era.

Popularized by surfing movies in the 1950’s and 1960’s, “Surfrider” Beach is the place to go for the ideal Southern California surfing experience. This beach offers 90 parking spaces, restrooms and picnic facilities. Although this beach has some of the best surfing and swimming conditions in Los Angeles, swimming areas are limited.
